This might be hard to believe but for all upcoming elections there must now be a paper trail. Remember the Hanging Chads???!? They had taken over Florida during the Bush race with Gore. The visions of those election inspectors holding up the election cards with dangling paper debris on them holds strong in my mind. I thought we had had enough with the paper ballot. Apparently not. Mandated by the Federal Government back in ’08 all election districts now have to have a paper trail. My district, and the districts I lived in in CT and MA used voting machines with levers. I never used a paper ballot except for Junior High and High School when electing class officials. Is it because a certain administration distrusts computers or lever based machines? The national news has yet to comment on this new/ old trend. What it does do for sure is create more work, and more of a need for election day workers who will have to deal with a whole host of new problems from blanks, to too much fill in the blanks, rips in the paper ballot to the new ballot tabulators machines getting jammed or breaking down. The election day workers or Election Inspectors must now get to the polls by 5AM instead of 5:30AM. They work until 9PM in New York when the polls close. That’s more than a 12 hour day for about $200 in pay. I think the federal government needs to rethink the election process and maybe IBM, or Apple can step forward with an “Election Pad” to be used at designated election centers only. Imagine the buzz, imagine the branding, imagine the chaos. Then there will be election day hackers – accusations of corruption and cheating – of course using paper ballots eliminates all corruption. Or, does it? Hanging Chad’s anyone?
We just celebrated the 4th of July last weekend. Woo Hoo! Nothing like a patriotic holiday to get all excited and shout, BBQ, light a few sparklers (only in your backyard) drink heavily or not at all, get stuck in traffic on the East End of LI, hog the Hamptons, walk on the beach, run into people you would rather not run into but, hey, it’s a free country now and money let’s you roam at will, and reminisce about old times. It was a long time ago when we broke away from the British rule. They’ve forgiven us. We’ve forgiven them and are global partners on many fronts. Funny thing is, it took a couple hundred more years after our Revolutionary War before female citizens of the United States even had the right to vote. Say What? Yes, it is true. Funny really considering that our ancestors who came over from England had Monarchies – Kings, and Queens who ruled their land. It was quite acceptable to have a woman in charge of their land, their military and their economy. But, how interesting with the freedom of religion that they so wanted in their own land, they oppressed the female leads somewhat. We’ve come a long way but not far enough in some aspects. When I was in Graduate in school in Boston, a very historical town, I joined a woman’s professional association. Yes they do exist. It was for female communicators of all things. Men have been helping men get ahead, mentor for jobs, life, careers for hundreds of years. Woman finally got the same idea. The members had all kinds of jobs and when I moved to New York some months later, I joined the NYC chapter of NYWICI ( New York Women in Communication). I met some very high level, high-profile women. I was honored to see my name in the membership book along side major magazine Editor’s, Broadcast Anchors, Presidents of Companies, entrepreneurs who started their own companies – and aspiring executives, all innovators in the vast field of communications. They were role models as well, showing me and others how to take advantage of education and opportunity and spin it into a happy career – most I met were very happy in deed. So, in tribute to that long-lost sisterhood that helped me many times look forward when all I could see were the stairs to the subway, thank you. Many said over the years at conferences, seminars, and at Matrix, that women need to find their voice. You definitely made me confident many years ago to emote and share my voice, and write, as part of a larger world. Happy 4th of July!
Since it was just Father’s day this brought up all the Hallmark and commercialization advertising. But, it also brought up some strong feelings with a lot of people about the influence of dads on their kids especially girls. With too much parental control, kids can grow up weary and insecure of taking off into the world when school , opportunity, and time calls for it. With too little, or poor parental control one can grow weary of relationships with others seeking approval from people they really shouldn’t be seeking approval from – meaning being taken advantage of having low self-esteem. With a little self- esteem confidence goes a long way. Without any, you can be clingy, needy, and seeking the approval of men who are only interested in pleasing themselves and taking advantage of those needy girls. With the arrest of Joran Vandersloot this also brought back all the speculation about what really happened to Natalie Holloway. Was it white slavery as some had suggested? Did he sell her for some cash? We now know what a gambling addict he is. Why did she go off with these Aruba locals and away from her friends that she knew and trusted? She was on the cusp of adult hood, going off to college? What parent and school system would have their high school students go to the Caribbean on their senior trip? Unruly behavior, poor choices? Uh, yeah! What happened to waiting until college to go on spring break which the student going on, actually pays for themselves with money they actually earned from working? A little self-esteem. That is what separates the boys from the men. With this steamy weather lately there is nothing more sexy, strong, and charismatic as someone with self-confidence, the ability to think on their feet and choose wisely. Okay so if they have air conditioning, CAC, even better! Who wants every client that walks through the door no matter how rude, sarcastic and chaotic they are? Feeling weak? Can’t say what you want to say but being sincere and tactful at the same time. What’s in between? Whether in your personal life or professional you will meet and work with people from all sorts of backgrounds, upbringings, and cultural beliefs. I personally love the mix and diversity. It proves to me that people from all cultures can be brought together with common ground of similar interests and work focus and core beliefs. Like a Subaru – being safe is sexy. Can’t get enough of that steamy self-esteem. Happy Graduation to all the high school graduates and remember girls if that cute guy is a little too clingy and seems really immature at the same time – he is. Move on. Your self-esteem will thank you.
